Addressing a critical need

The MUSC College of Nursing is seeking your help in heading off a new nursing shortage.

South Carolina and the nation as a whole are expected to experience another critical nursing shortage, driven by a growing senior population and an increase in the number of nurses retiring from the workforce.

At a time when nursing schools should be boosting enrollment, they are instead turning away more qualified applicants than ever – 64,000 in 2016 alone, according to a report published by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. The problem, these schools say, is that they simply don’t have enough teachers to accommodate all the students they need to accept.

The MUSC College of Nursing seeks to build a $6 million endowment over the next three years to strengthen this important part of the nursing pipeline.  Specifically, the Faculty Excellence Project will:

  • Provide additional funding to recruit, develop, and retain the best and brightest nursing educators, clinicians, and researchers.
  • Grant competitive annual stipends to faculty to promote and enhance their scholarly and leadership development.
  • Elevate the academic caliber of the MUSC College of Nursing, increase student enrollment, and positively impact the nursing discipline and health care.

Investment in this fund will be recognized by  naming opportunities at the MUSC College of Nursing. With your support, we at the MUSC College of Nursing can grow into the next phase of our history and meet the need for a skilled and robust nursing workforce.
